Their legacy is being reclaimed as Ukraine fights to preserve its cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Ukraine, they are known as the \u201cExecuted Renaissance,\u201d pioneering literary artists whose lives were snuffed out by Stalin\u2019s brutal purges in the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Living together in\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ui.org.ua\/en\/postcard\/slovo-house-word-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an apartment building<\/a>\u00a0and embracing experimental art forms, these writers, poets and directors spearheaded a flourishing of Ukrainian culture and identity about a century ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But that golden age was short-lived. The Soviet regime soon began to surveil, arrest and ultimately\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/svidomi.in.ua\/en\/page\/slovo-building-how-did-the-executed-renaissance-affect-kharkivs-cultural-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">execute about half of the writers<\/a>\u00a0in an effort to stifle Ukrainian culture. For decades, their works were banned and their legacy nearly erased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the face of Russia\u2019s invasion, the story of the Executed Renaissance has been given new resonance as many Ukrainians seek to reclaim their cultural heritage. The lives of the writers are being told in a\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/concert.ua\/en\/event\/mur-03-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">musical<\/a>, a\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt15485194\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">feature movie<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/booklion.lviv.ua\/en\/slovo-pro-budynok-slovo\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqOY3A6i1LulOWQqzhpN_ir-6O1Lp6KO40HWMxOunxHzTnaRg8W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a memoir<\/a>. There is even a fashion line themed around them, with\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C8HUAMQNmIY\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sweatshirts riddled with bullet holes<\/a> to symbolize their killings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a big trend,\u201d said Yaryna Tsymbal, the author of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/tempora.com.ua\/uk\/books\/?tags=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Our Twenties<\/a>,\u201d an anthology of Ukrainian literature from the 1920s. Many people have embraced Ukrainian culture \u2014 like\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/05\/arts\/music\/ukraine-folk-music.html\">folk songs<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/25\/world\/europe\/ukraine-poets-russia-war.html\">poetry<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/08\/world\/europe\/decolonizing-ukrainian-art-oksana-semenik.html\">overlooked painters<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 to affirm their identity and counter\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/15\/arts\/design\/ukraine-war-culture-art-history.html\">Moscow\u2019s attempts to erase their country\u2019s cultural heritage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the story of the artists has particularly struck a chord with Ukrainians, because they have viewed it as a warning of what could happen if Ukraine loses the war: the silencing of their culture, once again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat they seek in this story of the Executed Renaissance is the inspiration to keep fighting,\u201d said Oleksandr Khomenko, the director of the musical. \u201cThey don\u2019t want history to repeat itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the center of this story is Slovo House, a writers\u2019 residence named after the Ukrainian for \u201cword.\u201d Completed in 1929 in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, then the capital of Soviet Ukraine, it was a modern building in which each apartment had its own bathroom and telephone, a luxury at the time, said Tetiana Pylypchuk, the head of the Kharkiv Literature Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The 60 or so writers who lived there with their families partly financed the project, but its completion relied on Soviet approval and funding,\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/perspectivia.net\/servlets\/MCRFileNodeServlet\/pnet_derivate_00004810\/Essay%20Bohdan%20Tokarsky_Open%20Access_A.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scholars say<\/a>. At the time, the Communist leadership in Moscow sought to build loyalty across the Soviet Union by promoting national cultures, in a reversal of czarist-era Russification policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ukrainian culture thrived as a result, and Slovo House, with its vibrant community of writers and playwrights living under one roof, symbolized this renaissance. Stalin complained about Mr. Khvyliovyi, who expressed his yearning for independence with a slogan that later became famous: \u201cAway from Moscow!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1933, around the same time Moscow imposed a human-made famine on Ukraine known as\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/24\/world\/europe\/ukraine-holodomor-famine-memorial.html\">the Holodomor<\/a>, Stalin began a crackdown on Ukrainian culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Slovo House, once a vibrant creative hub, became a deathtrap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Soviet secret police began arresting the residents of Slovo House one by one. On May 13, 1933, Mr. Khvyliovyi gathered fellow writers in his apartment to discuss the situation. During the meeting, he went into his room and shot himself in the head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cKhvyliovyi did that to send a warning, to show what was coming,\u201d said Taras Tomenko, the director of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MxR257eHEFE&amp;ab_channel=%D0%9C%D0%A3%D0%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slovo House: Unfinished Novel<\/a>,\u201d a feature film about the artists\u2019 residency that was one of the\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dzygamdb.com\/en\/box-office?t=1&amp;page=0&amp;pageSize=20&amp;sd=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most-watched Ukrainian movies this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some 30 Slovo House writers were executed, and a few others sent to penal colonies, Ms. Tsymbal said. The university had kept in its archives a 1930 copy of the book, which had never been reprinted in Ukraine, she said. It has since been published again in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even after Ukraine\u2019s independence, Russian literature, songs and movies continued to dominate. Interest in Slovo House was so low that when Mr. Tomenko first pitched his idea for his film in 2012, \u201cnobody cared,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt that time, Ukrainian culture wasn\u2019t even on the radar,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Russia\u2019s cultural dominance was such that Mr. Khomenko, the musical\u2019s director, long thought that Ukrainian writers were \u201cboring,\u201d he acknowledged. He said he \u201cgrew up loving Russian literature,\u201d staging plays in Kyiv, the capital, about Russian writers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then came\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/news-event\/ukraine-russia\">Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Trapped in Russian-occupied territory for the first month of the invasion, with no cellphone network in the countryside house where he had taken refuge, Mr. Khomenko said, he \u201chad a lot of time to reconsider his past choices,\u201d realizing that he had spent years promoting the culture of a country that was now erasing his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Back in Kyiv in April 2022, he made a decision to focus on the Ukrainian artists he had long overlooked. He set his sights on the Slovo House residents, recognizing in them a compelling, untold story. Along with friends, he\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AHxhKPp6xAk&amp;ab_channel=%D0%9C%D0%A3%D0%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recorded an album<\/a>\u00a0inspired by their tragic lives, called \u201cYou [Romance],\u201d before turning it into a musical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On a recent evening in Kyiv, a packed theater resonated with the cheers of spectators who had flocked to watch the musical, which mixes rock, pop and rap music. It chills me to the bone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like many in Ukraine, Ms. Kovalchuk now fears that history is repeating itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dozens of Ukrainian\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/news\/ukraine-over-100-cultural-figures-killed-by-russian-forces-since-full-scale-invasion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cultural figures have been killed<\/a>\u00a0in today\u2019s war, stifling the country\u2019s cultural potential. They have been called the \u201cNew Executed Renaissance.\u201d At the end of the Slovo House musical in Kyiv, actors wore black T-shirts emblazoned with the names of recently killed artists, drawing a direct link between the two artistic generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Slovo House itself is also helping build a bridge between the two periods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The building itself still stands, though it has long ceased being a writers\u2019 residency and is now made up of ordinary apartments. In 2020, the Kharkiv Literature Museum purchased one, offering temporary stays to artists and cultural researchers.
