There is no Ukrainian who does not remember the events that unfolded in Kyiv and across the country between late 2013 and early 2014. For most Ukrainians, these events marked a turning point in their consciousness, as no one could have imagined that, in modern times, peaceful protests in Ukraine would lead to such a tragic and bloody outcome. The first demonstrators fell to the bullets of security forces in January 2014, but the most intense clashes in central Kyiv occurred between February 18 and 20. During these days, nearly a hundred protesters were killed by gunfire. These individuals, who gave their lives for the eternal dream of the Ukrainian nation\u2014a free and democratic country\u2014became known as the Heavenly Hundred<\/em>. In their honor, February 20 was designated as the Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It all began in November 2013 when then-President Viktor Yanukovych, despite his promises, refused to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union. This decision signaled a return to pro-Russian policies and outraged the majority of Ukrainians, who envisioned a European future for their country. In response, the first protesters\u2014mainly students and young people\u2014gathered on Independence Square, demanding a change in the country’s course.<\/p>\n

The brutal crackdown on student protesters on the night of November 30 became a point of no return. Thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets, protesting not only against Yanukovych\u2019s policies but also against government tyranny. Maidan<\/em> became a symbol of the fight for dignity, freedom, and the right of Ukrainians to determine their own future. The government responded with repression, intimidation, and violence.<\/p>\n

The climax of the Revolution of Dignity<\/em> came between February 18 and 20, 2014. During these days, gunfire echoed through the streets of Kyiv, barricades burned, and peaceful protesters were shot by snipers. The deaths of the Heavenly Hundred<\/em> became a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for independence, democratic values, and Ukraine\u2019s European future. Following these tragic events, Yanukovych lost control over the situation and fled to Russia.<\/p>\n

Today, Ukraine continues on the path of transformation, a path won through the sacrifices of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred<\/em>. Their bravery remains a reminder of the price of freedom and the responsibility of every Ukrainian for the future of their country.
