The history of the birth of the Great Flag of Ukraine in Cyprus
Today, on August 23, Ukraine celebrates its National Flag Day. Did you know that even in Cyprus, there exists the Great Flag of Ukraine? Crafted by dedicated Ukrainians during the summer of 2022, it stands as a symbol of unity and resilience. We spoke with Lyolya Filimonova, the visionary behind the idea, and Zoya Kernasovskaya, the talented designer who brought it to life.
Lyolya, an energetic activist and volunteer, has been organizing pro-Ukrainian events on the island since spring 2022, rallying devoted Ukrainian patriots around her cause. On the other hand, Zoya, a Ukrainian designer and artist, found herself in Cyprus due to the conflict, accompanied by her family.
The concept of the Great Flag came to light after a volunteer initiative called Communities Army of Ukraine highlighted large Ukrainian flags appearing globally as symbols of solidarity in the face of war. Lyolya’s vision wasn’t just to sew a flag but to unify Ukrainians in Cyprus, creating a powerful emblem for their community.
Initially met with skepticism, Lyolya’s idea gained traction when she launched the “1 euro for the Flag of Ukraine” flash mob. Over 150 Ukrainians in Cyprus, from more than 30 Ukrainian cities, became patrons of the “Great Flag of Ukraine in Cyprus” project, pooling resources to bring the vision to life.
With the help of supportive Ukrainians, Zoya meticulously planned the sewing process, despite lacking conventional tools. They managed to organize everything in a matter of days and completed the flag in just three hours, exceeding all expectations.
The flag’s debut was marked by a series of events across five cities in Cyprus. The initiative garnered significant support, even from the Embassy of Ukraine in Nicosia. Representatives from multiple diplomatic missions and the Cypriot government participated, showcasing the flag’s profound impact.
Throughout the year, the flag participated in various events, symbolizing unity and support. It was present at sports competitions and cultural gatherings, bolstering athletes and fostering community spirit. For the Ukrainians in Larnaca, the flag holds special significance at the Anchor-Heart monument, representing resilience against adversity.

As this year’s National Flag Day approaches, Larnaca’s Anchor-Heart monument will once again be embraced by the Great Ukrainian Flag. An event is planned for August 23 at 19:00 near the Anchor on Finikoudes in Larnaca, inviting all who care to join and raise the flag in honor of Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and unity. Together, let’s commemorate the enduring spirit that gave life to the Great Ukrainian Flag in Cyprus.
