Anniversary of the Russians’ blowing up of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station

A year ago, on June 6, 2023, Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. The massive floodwaters destroyed everything in their path, including residential houses, buildings, and industrial and commercial facilities.

Experts have called the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP the largest disaster in Europe, and environmentalists have compared the tragedy to a nuclear bomb explosion or a nuclear power plant accident. This catastrophe led to the deaths of people and animals, destruction of nature, and caused horrendous damage, including:

  • Flooding of over 80 settlements in the southern regions of Ukraine.
  • The loss of 35-40% of Ukraine’s freshwater reserves.
  • Pollution of the Dnipro River and the Black Sea with chemicals.
  • Destruction of 11,000 hectares of forest land: biodiversity was damaged, and habitats were polluted.

This trully is the largest man-made environmental disaster in Europe in the last 10 years and fully fits the definition of ecocide.
