Understanding the Current Issues in Ukraine

EXPLAINING:
1. UKRAINE’S POSITION ON THE NEGOTIATIONS
On 19 February, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined Kyiv’s position on negotiations with the aggressor state.
● The talks between the US and Russian representatives helped the Russian dictator break out of the years-long isolation he had been in after unleashing a criminal, unprovoked war against
Ukraine.
● During any discussions on ways to end the war, the issues of prisoner release and the cessation of Russia’s aerial terror must be addressed.
● The No. 1 priority for Ukraine is defence against the aggressor, not elections, which will certainly take place after the end of martial law.
● The key issue in ending the war is security guarantees for Ukraine. The only alternative to NATO membership is to strengthen its own army and deploy a foreign contingent.
● Ukraine will accept neither Putin’s ultimatums nor the results of agreements concluded without Ukraine’s participation.

2. KEITH KELLOGG’S VISIT TO UKRAINE
On 19 February, US Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg began a three-day visit to Ukraine.
● According to Kellogg, part of his mission is to “sit and listen” to ensure the US understands Kyiv’s position and the situation in Ukraine.
● Ukraine’s leadership is ready to provide the U.S. Special Representative with all the information necessary for a correct understanding of the situation both at the front and in the rear.
● Kyiv is interested in ensuring that the White House has reliable information and is protected from disinformation from Russia, which wants to sow division between Ukraine and its partners.
● Ukraine counts on continued support from the United States and is committed to maintaining bilateral partnerships.
● Like the White House, Kyiv wants to end the war this year, but the peace must be just and stable.
